Finite Debye-Waller factor for "classical" atom-surface scattering.

چکیده
We consider atom-surface scattering at low surface temperature, fixed incident energy and fixed interaction potential. We examine the limit as the mass m of the incident particle -oc, and thus its de Broglie wavelength --* 0. We show that in this "classical" limit, the Debye-Waller factor (a quantum effect) for the strictly elastic scattering amplitude tends to a finite limit. We propose scattering of 20 meV Ar atoms from cold Cu(111) as a promising experiment to verify this effect. Debye - Waller factor in solid 3 He and 4
The Debye-Waller factor and the mean-squared displacement from lattice sites for solid He and He were calculated with path-integral Monte Carlo at temperatures between 5 and 35 K, and densities between 38 and 67 nm. It was found that the mean-squared displacement exhibits finite-size scaling consistent with a crossover between the quantum and classical limits of N and N, respectively. The tempe...
متن کاملThe effect of thermal vibrations on extended x-ray absorption fine structure. I
The form of the De bye-Waller factor in EXAFS is discussed in detail, and an expression is obtained for this factor in a general three-atom system of Cs symmetry. The normal modes which contribute to the De bye-Waller factors for each scattering path are dependent on the symmetry of the system. A series of model three-atom systems with C 2" symmetry are studied and the DebyeWaller factors as a ...

The Debye-Waller factor and the mean-squared displacement from lattice sites for solid 3He and 4He were calculated with Path Integral Monte Carlo at temperatures between 5 K and 35 K, and densities between 38 nm−3 and 67 nm−3. It was found that the mean-squared displacement exhibits finite-size scaling consistent with a crossover between the quantum and classical limits of N−2/3 and N−1/3, resp...
متن کاملComparative surface dynamics of amorphous and semicrystalline polymer films.
The surface dynamics of amorphous and semicrystalline polymer films have been measured using helium atom scattering. Time-of-flight data were collected to resolve the elastic and inelastic scattering components in the diffuse scattering of neutral helium atoms from the surface of a thin poly(ethylene terephthalate) film. Debye-Waller attenuation was observed for both the amorphous and semicryst...
متن کاملDebye-Waller factor in He→Cu(001) collisions revisited: the role of the interaction potentials
Following the recently accumulated information on the vibrational properties of the Cu(001) surface acquired through singleand multiphonon He atom scattering experiments and the concomitant theoretical investigations, we have reexamined the properties of the Debye-Waller factor (DWF) characteristic of the He→Cu(001) collisions using the recently developed fully quantal and three-dimensional mod...
